Farhan Akhtar is one of the best names in the Hindi Film Industry right now, and therefore it is understood that expectations from Don2: The Chase Continues was quite intense. There were three good reason 1) The farhan Akhat-SRK comination, 2) The super good predecessor Don(2006), Ra-One (good hit for SRK, a very bad movie though, and Zindagi Naa… for Farhaan Akhtar). 3) This is the Christmas- New Year week and hence, we expect the best at this time. Don 2 fails to meet the expectations. Now that line does not mean it is a bad movie, but it simply is not good enough.
One great positive of Don 2, is that this was supposed to be a new story and thus it had the power to hold interest. A power that remains underutilized in this movie.
Story: As expected Don is alive, and thriving. He still has loads of attitude and style and the police are still hunting for him… you know the tag line. ‘Don ko pakadna…” etc etc… this is the first time this line seems boring!!! yes it is boring, as if Don is such a strange egomaniac that he keeps on telling this to everyone!! The plot is simple, escape from prison, perform a heist, befreind old enemies, ditch them later, fool the cops, take the moolah and run….
Something tells me that there have been enough movies about classy heists. Indian cinema, esp Hindi has a huge global viewership. With the kind of money that goes in a Hindi movie is now comparable to any Hollywood mega. What brings Hindi film down is mediocrity in imagination, execution, and a huge dependency on star power !!! Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol has just released and this movie too rides on the age old story, yet it keeps you engaged, because it can be seen that the team of MI has put in effort. On the Don 2 side, well it is very stylish, very sleek, gorgeous locations and weak script. The songs by Shakar-Ehsaan -Loy who are one of the best music director in many years is thoroughly dissapointing. Even the Theme song fails to impress. Katrina Kaif’s item number is okay to say the best.
Hindi film run on trends and so we have Chameli, neither the song is great nor the idea of the song is new. Waste.
Don 2 fails for three main reasons,
On action front, one can see the huge influence of Mission Impossibles and James Bonds, however at times it seems that we are seeing a Hindi version on MI, which is sad. Atleast the process of stealing can be innovative and NOT INFLUENCE BY HOLLYWOOD. It sad to see the Indian movies still apeing Hollywood while they can pretty much innovate their own kind of actions!
Acting is as per requirement, though Om Puri’s character seems unnecessary and so is Lara Dutta’s. Priyanka Chopra deserves a thumbs up. She looks fit, tough and determined, proving her versatility as an actor. Boman Irani is always superb and reprising his role has Vardhaan, he is meaner than before. Shah Rukh Khan looks wicked & cool and his dialogues are cheeky. However, somewhere the charm is quite missing.
